We've petitioned HHS: kids' lungs can't wait on politics.

Asthma attacks, heat emergencies, and chronic childhood illness are rising with the climate, and HHS has closed the one office built to respond. USMUST and a coalition of doctors, nurses, and public health leaders have formally petitioned the department to recognize climate change as a public health crisis and reinstate the Office of Climate Change and Health Equity.

Our priorities for 2026–2027

  • Candidate endorsements and values-aligned governanceWe aim to establish and implement USMUST’s endorsement process to identify, evaluate, and support federal and state candidates whose leadership aligns with our core mission of environmental sustainability, democratic integrity, and community well-being. USMUST will utilize its 501(c)(4) platform to build meaningful, lasting relationships with public servants committed to responsive, community-centered governance.
  • Administrative and legal engagement for environmental healthWe are committed to leading a national administrative petition to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to encourage federal leaders to uphold public commitments to prevention, scientific integrity, and children’s health. By addressing recent policy rollbacks, such as the closure of the Office of Climate Change and Health Equity and changes to the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards, USMUST seeks to demonstrate that addressing climate-related health risks is essential to protecting vulnerable families, lower-income households, and communities experiencing high rates of chronic disease.
  • Institutional capacity-building and advocacy infrastructure to support USCAN membersWe aim to develop USMUST into a reliable, well-governed 501(c)(4) advocacy organization that complements the broader U.S. Climate Action Network (USCAN) ecosystem. Responsive to direct member survey feedback, USMUST will provide participating organizations with the strategic resources, compliance education, and coordination needed to advance shared climate and environmental goals within permissible 501(c)(4) guidelines.

Organizing. Mobilizing. Winning Elections.

To urgently drive bold and equitable climate action by fostering power building among a diverse network of organizations and providing political resources to accelerate collective impact from the local level to the global scale.
